In evidence to the Select Committee, Anglicare SA has called for a clear separation of responsibilities between government and non-government agencies.
The State Liberals have already outlined the need to remove child protection from the Education Department and to have a Children’s Commissioner with investigative powers.
“For a start, we need to separate the roles of family support and the removal of children as they are incongruent,” said Shadow Minister for Families and Child Protection Rachel Sanderson.
“It is inconceivable that the same agency a complaint is made against is the same one that investigates that complaint.
“The Weatherill Labor Government has made a mess of our child protection system – we need to restore South Australians’ faith in Families SA.
“As legislators, we need to make sure that we do everything we possibly can to protect our society’s most vulnerable members.
“We simply cannot sit on our hands and keep things at the status quo.
“Children at risk of abuse and neglect have been let down terribly by the performance of Families SA and this needs to change.”
